Crappy day and a cake

BEWARE! There may be cussing, swearing, and vulgarity in this post, cause it's just been that kind of day. It probably going to be one of those "too long, didn't read" kind of posts, but I need to vent, so skip it or read it, I don't care.

It's funny that today was so frustrating because just yesterday, I told my therapist that I am happier than I have been in a long time, and how I've learned to control my reactions and not let things bother me as much as they used to. Well, I think I was being tested today.

Our landlord has been telling us for a while now that he's going to put a washer, dryer, and dishwasher in our apartment. Last time we talked to him about it, he said it would sometime this month, on a Saturday or Sunday. Of course we said that was fine, just to give us a little notice first. Let me give you a little background info. This man is probably the biggest idiot I know. He's very disorganized and lacks any kind of management skills. He is really bad about not giving notice and just showing up when something needs to be done. I could go on and on about how much this guy gets on my nerves, but I'll spare you.

So Landlord Dumbass calls last night at 9:35 and tells my husband that his "guys" will be here tomorrow and the plumbers can start working on putting in the washing machine and dishwasher and the other "guys" are going to whatever needs to be done to the cabinets to ready them for the dishwasher, and to run the wiring for the dryer. All of this is supposed to happen in the kitchen, but the breaker box is in the bedroom, about as far as it can be away from where the dryer is supposed to go. So the plan was to run the wiring along the top of the wall from the bedroom to the kitchen, which meant that everything along the walls where the wiring was going to be installed had to be moved so the "guy" could get the walls. The problem is that this apartment is tiny and there is stuff along most of the walls, so it all had to be moved. Also, all of the stuff in the bottom cabinets had to be taken out and a lot of stuff had to be moved around in the kitchen so they would be able to do what they needed to do. So we stayed up really late trying to get stuff moved around (I think I went to bed at 4:00), because the "guys" were supposed to be here at 8:00. I had a chiropractic appointment that I had to reschedule because they were supposed to be here at 8:00 and neither Mr. McHacker or I wanted a bunch of strangers in our home while we weren't home.

I waited. Then I got tired of waiting and decided to take a nap. Around 11:00, Landlord Dumbass woke me up by ringing the bell AND beating on the door - not a pleasant way to wake up. He proceeds to tell me that the plumbers aren't coming today, but they'll be here tomorrow. So I ask if there is anything that can be done today because my home is turned upside down and it would be nice to at least get something done today. He says the carpenter is here working on another apartment and he will go see if we can get the cabinets done and the wiring ran and that he would come back and let me know.

I waited. Then I got tired of waiting and called my husband to bitch around 2:00. He proceeded to call Landlord Dumbass to find out what is going on. That's when we find out that the way he planned on running the wiring is not up to code and can't be done that way. Which means that the dryer will have to be in the BEDROOM! All the moving shit around last night was for nothing! AND now we have to rearrange the bedroom to accommodate the dryer. So you know what got done today? Landlord Dumbass got the "guy" to replace the doorknob since I told him it had been sticking.

This one day has completely fucked up the rest of my week and weekend because one man is such a dumbass. Not only did I have to reschedule an appointment, I had a cake to do today on top of that and was planning on taking the car to get a belt replaced because I have to drive 35 miles to deliver the cake tomorrow and had promised to volunteer at the school tomorrow while I was there. And we were planning on Mr. McHacker taking Friday off so we could leave Thursday evening to make the trip to see my family this weekend. But now I will have to deliver the cake and hope the belt is okay since I won't have a chance to get it fixed until Friday. Which means we won't get to take our trip because if we leave on Friday and come back on Sunday that's really only one day we get to spend there which is really not even worth making the trip for. Plus, since I already have obligations, Mr. McHacker is taking off of work tomorrow (actually I guess it's today by now) so someone can be here while these "guys" are in the apartment. And he really doesn't need to take off two days in a row in the same week. GRRR I hope tomorrow is better.

Okay, enough ranting. Here's the cake I did today. It's for the janitor at the school I used to work at. The Sunshine Committee usually gets him a cake for his birthday each year and of course they asked if I would do it. These people kept me busy with cakes last year, lets hope they'll continue to do the same this year.

I had a little extra batter, so I made a small cake for myself and Mr. McHacker. Since I had a ton of extra icing in a lot of colors, I tried making it look like tie-dye. I LOVE tie-dye (I'll always be a hippie) and thought it would make a fun cake. I pretty happy with it. It made me feel better. That and listening to "If I Had a Million Dollars" by the Barenaked Ladies. That's my happy song :-)

First... your cakes are GREAT! You are so talented.

Second... a dryer in your bedroom? Your landlord really is a dork and apparently cheap since he doesn't want to do it the right way. Have you guys considered contacting the city since there have to be city codes and it doesn't seem like they are doing things the right way?

Geez, sounds like your landlord's in the wrong line of work. Hope things get better asap. Your cakes look fabulous and yummy!

Thanks ladies! Deanna, I have thought about it. I'm also thinking of starting a petition to get the law changed about landlords giving prior notice before entering a tenant's dwelling. As of now Mississippi Code does not specify the amount of time a landlord has to give before entering. Most states it's 24 hours.
